This quote is a personal favorite because it is the quote that has the book title in it! I love when you finally connect the title to the text, it is similar to when you get the final puzzle piece to fit, it is so satisfying. I know it’s crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. “What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff – I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. Lawyers are usually defending guilty people, he thinks that everyone is innocent and that is his problem. Holden also says that they go around saving innocent guys lives, but are their actually that many innocent people to save? Holden’s own innocence and youth is showing through this quote because his mind is not completely aware of the trouble in the world. He thinks that lawyers are just guys who go around and flaunt their money in peoples faces, but if they did not have their “hot-shot” job they would not be acting like that. He takes his initial thoughts about people and does not change them. Holden is very judgmental although he likes to act like he is not. All you do is make a lot of dough and play golf and play bridge and buy cars and drink Martinis and look like a hot-shot.” (chap. “I mean they’re all right if they go around saving innocent guys’ lives all the time, and like that, but you don’t do that kind of stuff if you’re a lawyer. Quotations: “Lawyers are all right, I guess – but it doesn’t appeal to me,” I said. Holden gives Phoebe his red hunting hat once he leaves. He sneaks into his house and finds her and she keeps telling him that their father is going to kill him for getting kicked out of school. He really wants to talk to Phoebe and so he starts to find his way home. Holden then gets very drunk and tries to make a date with almost every girl he could possibly have a shot with. Luce asks Holden if he needs to be psychoanalyzed and then Luce leaves. Holden meets his older friend Luce and they talk about life and sex but Luce does not want to be apart of that conversation. He goes to see a show at Radio City Music hall to distract himself, he starts thinking about how Allie used to love the Rockettes. Summary: Holden finds himself thinking about Jane again and almost calls her but then he stops himself.
